SIX FLAGS GREAT ADVENTURE

We are writing to express our opposition to the confinement and use of marine mammals, including both dolphins and sea lions, at the Great Adventure Theme Park. These marine mammals are exposed to a constant barrage of thunderous rumbling and screams emanating from thrill rides that are actually surrounding their tanks. In short, dolphins and sea lions do not belong performing in a tank between roller coasters in an amusement park.

It is not our intention to condemn the kinds of thrill rides present at Great Adventure, but we do however strongly condemn the daily constant exposure of the sea lions and dolphins to this kind of disturbing and violent mechanical noise.

We are concerned for the survival of the marine mammals for many reasons. They are in an unnatural, restrictive, chlorinated environment, they are being forced to do inane tricks for food which is known to increase the incidence of aggression toward humans, they are exposed to the immune-suppressing disease-prone conditions of captivity, and they are being assaulted daily by a serious, undoubtedly violent acoustic intrusion which can only be gravely stressful. This chaotic environment is compromising the well-being of these mammals, for whom sadly there is no escape.

We believe the conditions in which these marine mammals are kept at Great Adventure is jeopardizing their existence and as such is in violation of several anti-cruelty statutes as well as the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

The reviews from visitors to the park repeatedly state that aside from watching the poor dolphins and sea lions, the theme park was a fun experience. "It is painful to see them in there," they say. Great Adventure does not need the inappropriate presence of dolphins and seals at this already oversized entertainment facility. Removing them would present no financial hardship and is the only humane solution to the awful conditions and display which these sea mammals are now enduring.

Great Adventure will not be on our list of places to visit until the dolphins and sea lions have been removed from the facility.
