PROTEST THE SLAUGHTER OF
HUNDREDS OF DOLPHINS AND WHALES
AT JAPANESE CONSULATE IN NYC
Wednesday, December 10, 2003
3:00 - 5:00 PM
299 Park Ave. (49th St.)
This the second international protest being organized all over the world to protest the cruel, inhumane and unnecessary slaughter of hundreds of whales and dolphins at the hands of the Japanese whaling industry. Today, the Japanese "drive fishery," to the detriment of ecological stability and against international treaties protecting marine life are "driving" hundreds of cetaceans into a small bay in Taiji, where the youngest and unblemished will be culled and sold to a lucrative aquarium industry and the remaining slaughtered and sold as whale meat.
JOIN activists from SEA SHEPHERD, EARTH ISLAND INSTITUTE, GREENPEACE, PETA, and others for the joint protest that will take place in over 22 cities around the world.
Although caught under the guise of "scientific whaling," meat from these dolphins and whales ends up in the supermarkets of Japan. This is despite overwhelming evidence that top of the food chain cetaceans carry an enormous toxic burden. A 2003 analysis of 72 whale or dolphin products in Japan markets revealed cetacean meat contains 5 times the maximum limit of mercury allowed by Japanese standards. Concentrations of methyl mercury were four times the maximum limit. The meat from dolphins caught at Taiji measured levels of 10.6 ppm of toxic methyl mercury, more than 35 times the legal limit of 0.3 ppm.
Furthermore, DNA analyses by several groups have consistently shown that the fraudulent sale of dolphin and porpoise products labeled as whale is widespread in Japan.
Please join with us to let the Japanese officials know that
THE WORLD IS WATCHING, OPPOSES AND UTTERLY CONDEMNS
the slaughter of these marine mammals.
